Teaching Interdisciplinary approaches to EU governance

Interdisciplinary courses on EU governance
The BA course on “EUropean Politics” and the MA courses on “EU Economic Policy-Making”, “The Social Basis of EU Economic Governance”, “The Political Economy of the Euro” and “The Politics of EU Legal Integration” are offered in the bachelor and master’s degree programs at the University Carlos III of Madrid.
The goal of these courses is to provide BA and MA students with an interdisciplinary perspective to explore the EU policy-making process. The courses build upon previous knowledge of the students about the foundations of EU institutions and it deploys it to analyze the most recent developments from diverse disciplines (e.g. economics, law, political science, sociology, etc.). The courses implement research-based techniques by requiring students to investigate EU policies and provide answers grounded in interdisciplinary approaches.
These courses also integrate “guest lectures” with key EU scholars, policy-makers and experts in current EU contemporary affairs. The lectures activate and consolidate the knowledge and skills of the students acquired during the PromethEUs courses by engaging them in discussions with key scholars and actors in the fabric of EU policies. The course lectures are frequently integrated as part of the PromethEUs’ Jean Monnet talk series.
Moreover, the BA course in European Politics includes a EU Simulation Game. The aim of this exercise is to teach, through the medium of a simulation game, about the rules and constraints of decision-making in a multi-level context of European integration. The simulation game allows the students to experience what drives negotiation processes and what explains the outcomes of EU decision-making.

Master classes on interdisciplinary research and methods
Intensive seminars for MA and PhD students to provide advanced training in a wide range of interdisciplinary approaches and methodologies for research in EU governance. The intensive courses, besides the advance training provided by experts, give access to the participants from the UC3M and other Universities in Spain and Europe to the main experts working on EU governance applying interdisciplinary approaches, methods and techniques. The master classes are designed to provide the students the opportunity to work hands-on with interdisciplinary research questions and how to plan and execute an original interdisciplinary based project on EU governance combining different disciplines and through interview, survey and data analysis techniques. As a result, students learn how to implement an interdisciplinary research design, how to distinguish between methodologies, and how to identify and choose research methods relevant to their main subject(s) of research inquiry in EU governance and studies.

Ideas Lab EUropa
Group tutorials where ‘peer feedback’ techniques are implemented that complement traditional top-down teaching and supervision techniques for developing a final BA thesis. Within the tutorials, the coordinators teach research design techniques and policy analysis tools. They also foster an environment of scientific discussion according to standards of excellence similar to those of other academic meetings so that the students can socialize in the process of creation and scientific interdisciplinary discussion by peers. A two-day roundtable are arranged for the participating students to get an opportunity to present their work-in-progress and get feedback from fellow students and the Chair team. The workshop serves as a forum for the discussion of common experiences, challenges and difficulties in carrying out interdisciplinary research in EU policy-making. Once the thesis have been evaluated, they are taught about how to increase their scientific and social impact through their publication in the Jean Monnet working papers series, which serve as a basis for their publication in scientific journals and their dissemination in the media. Finally, the participants have the chance to participate in the PromethEUs Best BA Thesis Award, which aims to recognize research in the field of European Union studies conducted by UC3M students of all the interdisciplinary degrees of the social science programmes. The LIE was also awarded the 2021-22 Teaching Innovation Certificate by the Vice-Rector’s Office for Strategy and Digital Education at UC3M.
